Bethesda: The indie-folk-pop group, Bethesda, defies explanation (even the multi-layered qualifier just used) and that is what makes this group of 5 friends from Kent, Ohio such a refreshing hip-shaking, foot stomping, thought-provoking group of music makers. Blending influences from seemingly unblendable musical genres, these folks paint pictures of human drama, the struggles of life, the beauty of nature, and the few truths they know to be true with poignant lyrics and musical movements that can rip you from your apathetic state and send you whirling.

The foundation of this group began when Eric Ling(guitar/songwriter) and Shanna Delaney (vocals/lyrcist) joined their hands, passion for change, and love of both music heard and made in forming the low-fi folk group Silver Diamond Doves. After playing vibrant house shows and indie venues across central and northeast Ohio, the group dissolved following the relocation of one of Dove’s members, Jonnie Ling (Eric’s brother) to Portland, OR. However, Shanna and Eric continued to write music, slowly transforming their low-fi folk songwriting style into multi-layered indie pop ballads.

Convicted of their need to share their music with other wandering folks, Shanna and Eric began tentatively seeking to add members to their circle of music-making. They found this at their local Vineyard Community Church where lovers of art, music, people, and progress are plentiful. Within this community Bethesda began to be formed. With the additions of Justin Rife on drums & percussion, Jesse Sloan on lead guitar and vocals, Dan Corby on bass and shouts, and Adam Fischer on keys and dobro, the marriage of influences ranging from punk-ska and heavy melodic rock to low-fi folk and indie pop was complete. The result is a new blend of indie rock that combines folk roots, indie beats, crafty guitars, and soaring vocals with meaningful lyrics to build songs that move your heart and feet in equal measures.

This dynamic combination has aided Bethesda in developing a loyal following in Northeast Ohio as they have played in venues ranging from house shows to indie clubs and higher profile venues, such as the Beachland Ballroom & Akron’s The Musica. In November of 2008, Bethesda released their self-titled EP, which included seven songs whose range of compositions displayed their true passion for creating music that is both uniquely theirs and readily available to music-loving friends. As a declaration of their belief in reaching out to the community and supporting the arts, this EP comes with SEVEN different covers (one based on each song), each created by a local artist within the vibrant Kent, Ohio scene.

Convinced that loving others will bring about change in the world and that artistic expression through music does not have to come at the expense of dance-a-bility, Bethesda sets out to continue to share life with others in the way that they know best: playing and dancing to the music we all make.
